I am deeply saddened to hear this news. Dr. Strickland was a wonderful person and teacher. She encouraged me to be the best student I could be and helped to develop me into a great writer. She worked hard to make sure that all of her students were a success. I will truly miss her! My prayers go out to her family and many friends!
- Larry Beaufort, Statesboro, GA
Dr. Strickland blessed me twice: 1. She encouraged me to 'be a risk taker.' Her words. Whenever I approach an investment decision, her words echo in my mind, and they give me the extra nudge to act. And I think, 'No reward without the risk. Dr. Strickland said so.' 2. She forgave me one time for an especially bad error. I'll always remember her greeting me afterwards with a smile and a bold, 'Peter, my man!' Will any of us ever forget that voice? That was her way of telling me 'All is well.' Whenever I have to forgive somebody, I remember Dr. Strickland. It's hard, but she showed me the way. She forgave, and she did it with class. Thank you to everybody here for sharing your memories, too.
- Pete, Elizabethton, TN
My most viivid memories of Jessie go back at least to '65-'66, her year of high school graduation. She was Captain of the Hampton High School Cheerleading squad that year. My mother, Phyllis Edens, taught there, and I was taken along to many a Hampton basketball game in the 60's, always loving to sit behind the cheerleaders where Jessie and the others gave me a lot of attention, but somehow Jessie was my big buddy! I remember when my mother brought her Bulldog annual home that year, featuring a picture of the graduating class in both front and back inside covers, it was Jessie, who she asked if I could spot in the crowd. Did it in just seconds--ha! After she moved to Savannah, she and I always exchanged Christmas correspondence at the very least. Suffice it to say I will miss her greatly. May God bless Sonya, Bob, and the rest of Jessie's family in this time of loss. Barton Edens also for Phyllis and Kent

Dr. Strickland was the superintendent of the Elizabethton TN Schools when my children attended school. My youngest son joined the Marines after high school and while he was in boot camp, Mrs. Strickland took the time to write him a note and thank him for his duty to our country and to wish him well and stay safe. That note meant so much to our son and our family. Our condolences go out to her family and friends. She was a wonderful lady. She will be sadly missed. The Shaffer Family

Dr. Jessie was especially supportive of me and my program at LCMS in Statesboro and also my move when seeking my last 60 months employment under social security before retirement. When a teacher is singled out with a thank you for a job well done it is truly a great morale booster. Thank you to a fine lady and educator.

Today you celebrated the life of an extraordinary woman—her enthusiasm for life was contagious. She was passionate about everything—family, faith, friends, and her profession regardless of the position in which she was serving. Dr. Jessie was so proud to be an educator. When she was the Director of Schools for Elizabethton City Schools, her wonderful creativity brought about many ways for us to “showcase” our excellence as a system. When Jessie had a vision—she was a compelling force—encouraging each person and each position within the schools to be a part of something good. She convinced us that “together” we could accomplish so much more than any of us could contribute individually. Jessie helped us to believe that we could “make things happen!” In the various phases of our own lives, she found time to support, console, and celebrate! I am so grateful to have known her—she inspired me many times. I know that God will use so many wonderful memories to comfort you.

Prayers for the family at this time of loss.

To Sonya and all the family I send my thoughts and prayers. Jessie was a great friend to me at Hampton High, but most of all she gave me confidence in myself that I had never had. Even though I had not seen her in quite some time, she was always always in my heart. She and I didn't get to spend a lot of time together through life, but she was one of those rare people who made you feel so special and I will carry that all the rest of my life. I wanted to go to her book signing so bad, but because of illness could not. I regret that so much. Again, my sympathy goes to all the family. Duckie, I love you and will see you again Duckie, you have always been so precious to me and always will be. Love, fellow Bulldog...Gloria

We have lost a wonderful friend and encourager but heaven has gained one and I’m sure there is a great homecoming celebration going on there. She was in inspiration to everyone she met. I had emails from her on the 4th of this month and she was telling me about Gray going to preschool and how much he loved it. Jena, Bob, Gray, Sonja she loved you all, words cannot express how much. She loved everyone she met but you all were so special to her. She has been a wonderful friend to us and we will never forget what a “special person” she was. We have so many great memories of time spent with her as do you. You all will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. We love you!

I first met Jessie on May 25th 2008. She was introduced as Duckie. My son Brian Stephen Kincaid,II married Jessie's niece, Amanda Chrisley Alexander. This was their Wedding day In Marco Island Florida. I had heard how wonderful this Auntie was and then I saw for myself how precious she was. I had made a new friend. She has been an amazing Great Auntie to Ava and Emme Brian and Mandy's daughters. They adored Aunt Duckie! She made everyone feel special. I went to visit Duckie with Brian and Mandy. She was an amazing chef and showed me her Southern Hospitality. We enjoyed many laughs together and kept in touch. Duckie was a Beautiful Christian Lady! This is not our home, we are just passing through! I know you are in a much better place! Your Miracle Happened! You have a new Life With Christ! Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family, and to the community who loved Dr. Jessie. Truly she was a gentle woman who captivated the hearts of young and old alike. She was a leader who was highly respected; her leadership was one of poise and grace, always acknowledging the kindness and accomplishment of others--she was no respecter of persons, for all were of value to her. Her outward beauty could not be missed, but her inward beauty made the 'picture' perfect! Dr. Jessie will truly be missed; with grace she showed us how to live…right up to the closing of earth's side story. Heaven rejoices!!

What can you say about a person who always put others in front of herself. Someone who brought comfort and joy to all. That was my aunt Duckie. When mom passed she held my hand and walked me out of the hospital when i didn't even think i had the stength to stand. She fed and put clothes on me when times were tough. To hear her and my mom laugh about something always put me in the best of moods. She was such a good mom and Jenna is following right in her footsteps. She was the best to go anywhere with. She always made sure your time was as fun as it gets. I know Duckie, mom, patsy, and granny are in heaven now around a kitchen table talking away. Aunt Duckie you were great to me great to my mom great to my brother and sister and great to my child. Great is always a word that should be brought up when one speaks of you. I love and will miss you dearly. IZZY.

You were at my bedside during my heart procedure, there for me and to support my family. I always remember your Southern drawl, genuine laughter and your smile. So glad I had a chance to visit you last week, to tell you one more time, face to face, that I love you. I'll always remember looking back at you one more time, and you smiled so big, even through your pain and struggling. It is an honor for me to speak and play the piano at your memorial. I remember the first time I met you and little Jenna at our Thanksgiving dinner table 15 years ago. I'm so glad you came to Statesboro and so glad you lived right behind my parents so I could always sneak over and see you so we could laugh. I'll always remember wearing your full length 'faux' fur coat to New York and I'll smile in remembrance of you. Thanks for so much more than I can mention hear. You touched so many lives and I thank God that I was one of them. Precious Jenna and Gray, you know I love you and I'm here. Terri Cartee Bland

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. 'Duckie' was a very special lady. She was definitely a trooper during her illness. She fought a good fight and kept the faith.
- Bobby and Aggie Lyons, Elizabethton, TN
Dr. Jessie would light up a room with her smile and her infectious enthusiasm. Education has lost of one its greatest shining stars! She motivated and affected many people in her journey through education. She not only cared about providing the best of those who worked with her, but she genuinely cared about each and every person she ever met. We will miss you. We loved you. We are excited that your journey continues in the arms of your God. We are happy to know that we have an angel of your mercy and caring looking over us. We will carry your memory with us as an inspiration to treat our fellow workers with kindness.
- Lynn Deal Futch, Statesboro, GA
The best tribute that I can think of is 'Dr. Jessie loved.' She loved her family; she loved her friends; she loved her profession; she loved life. I can still hear her 'Good Job!' as she would encourage her co-workers. She often talked about going back home to 'the hills.' I hope that her place in Heaven is on the side of a hill looking out over a valley that looks a lot like Tennessee. Thank God for allowing Dr. Jessie to be a part of my life.
- John Groover, Statesboro, GA
I had the honor to meet Ms. Jessie only a few months ago but what a great lady! I have never met anyone with so much spirit. We shared our love of family and God. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family as they have lost a wonderful person in their lives but heaven has another beautiful angel!
- Lisa McWilliams, Richmond Hill, GA
As Saint Peter opens up those Pearly Gates for a true and faithful servant, I hear the Lord depart from his usual, 'Well done!' to 'Good Job! G - double O D...' Dr. Jessie had the ability to engage, encourage, motivate, strengthen, and make everyone feel so deeply special. I will never forget her elegance, grace and wonderful humor. I will miss you, great lady, but will carry your many lessons with me forever. Prayers go to all who love you...and there are many.
- Lisa Cox, statesboro, GA
Dr. Jessie was one of the 'realest' people that I have ever met. She could inspire the greatest in people and she often shared her wisdom with me. She was a great mentor and friend and will be sorely missed. During the time that I worked with her, she not only inspired my confidence in myself, but allowed me to be inspired by others. Good works go farther in life than ambition, she used to say. God Bless you Dr. Jessie! XOXO

One minute with Jessie and you were hooked, an instant connection. She led with her heart and taught others to do the same. Although our ages were not close, our life experiences were. Small town values, big faith, and a love for people. I am a better Christian, husband, father, brother, and leader because I knew her. I'll spend the remainder of my career striving to make her proud. It is an honor that she called me friend! I look forward for the day we will reunite in Heaven.

Dr. Jessie, one of a kind, one who leaves a mark inside your heart forever. She has been a wonderful, sweet, intelligent, hard-working, loving lady, friend and educator and Christian. I feel very blessed to have worked with Dr. Jessie and that she was my son's English teacher. She would come to my classroom just to share something special that Chris wrote in her class. She was an angel on earth and now is an angel in heaven. I will never forget her and the encouragement that she gave Chris and me. She even took the time out of her busy schedule to go to Savannah one evening when Chris won an award. The earth has lost an exceptional person, but heaven has gained one. I know that we will see her again. However, being an only child, Jenna, I know how much you will miss your mom. I still miss mine every single day. My heart and prayers go out to your family, but to you especially. Please call or email me if I can help in anyway.
- Stacey Moore, Statesboro, GA

Dr. Jessie Strickland was truly an amazing woman. I had the opportunity to know her and her family. She is responsible for helping so many students, both directly and indirectly, by requiring more than the status quo. Her hard work helped to elevate Elizabethton City Schools and I am proud to be able to say that I graduated from Dr. Strickland's school system of excellence. Her impact will be felt for many, many years to come. Jenna, please know that my family and I thought the world of your mother and had a great amount of respect for her. I hope that you and your family can find some type of peace in this time of loss knowing that your mother left a legacy that many strive for but few will achieve.

- Karen Crowe, Elizabethton, TN

IZZY.

Once I became a part of Ducky's family by way of cousins, I quickly learned that this family is the most loving and selfless group of people that I have ever met. Even when she was in pure agony, she always had a smile on her face that could light up a room! My prayers are with her family.

First met Jesse when she became a teacher at Cloudland High School. Everyone went crazy over her. So pretty, sweet smile and wonderful personality. She was the kind of person you just wanted to be around. Always smiling, so optimistic in all things, just a beautiful lady inside and out. She was loved by all. I had her for a English teacher and for a Cheerleading Sponsor, great at both. She pushed us really hard, she wanted us to do our best and she brought out the best in everyone. Loved her! Love, thoughts and prayers with all her family. God Bless you and comfort you.

Jessie, you were loved by so many. you made us all laugh and feel better about ourselves. You always saw the best in everyone and your smile and laugher was infectious. I always looked forward to seeing you because I knew my day would be so much better. You believed in me and everyone you met. Thank you for being such a good friend of mine, my parents, my siblings, and to Patsy and Josh. You were so good to our family and always there in times of need and sickness.
